The UnderPressure Fine Art Web Site.PRESENT PROJECT: MULBERRY WOOD SCULPTURE.

The wood above is seen in three views, but is the same piece. It is Mulberry wood, taken from a tree outside my house when I lived in Ayden, North Carolina. At the time, I was doing my undergraduate degree at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. The sculpture department at that university is one of the liveliest ones I have ever seen. Amazing works of art come out of the sculpture department there. Anyway, this tree developed a disease and clearly had to be taken down. I saved parts of the trunk that I could. This piece is one I saved. It stands about 20 inches high. Noticeable markings are in this wood, which I refer to as the marble effect. To dry the trunk without loosing it to cracking, I covered the ends of the trunk in polyurethane. Each month, I checked it and added protection when needed. The trunk finally cured properly, and then I covered the entire trunk, plank and all with a good wood varnish. It is ready to sculpt. It is extremely dense and hard now, and I will have to use proper tools to carve it.
TOOLS USED: I have a variety of hand tools and mallets. I also have other carving tools that double as relief printmaking woodblock carving tools. Sometimes, they are better tools to use for the effect I am seeking. As in stone carving, I keep around some electric tools and airtools for sanding and grinding. With wood sculpture, I also use fine grinders, such as the Dremel sets. I use the rifflers for wood too, as they can get into small, tight areas. Hand sanding with paper finishes the work, and it gets a finishing touch. I am looking into varnishes versus waxing, and you will see some information on that in the research area of this project.
